Via NYGMen, I find the story of a high school player at North Fort Myers High School in Florida named Noel Devine. At 18 years old, Devine has lived through things no teenager should have experienced: He's lost both parents to AIDS, he's fathered two children, and he's gone through a custody battle that included his grandmother, the parents of a former teammate, and Deion Sanders (really). No one disputes that Devine is a unique talent; you can see for yourself at YouTube.

But is Devine going to live up to his talent? It's unclear whether he'll be able to play in college because his grades are poor, he's taken remedial classes, and he hasn't achieved a qualifying score on his standardized tests. It's a great story by Robert Andrew Powell in the New York Times Magazine. Read the whole thing.
