Auburn's Kenny Irons Is Starting To Feel The Love

Like many of you I was surprised during the summer when the preseason publications came out and Auburn running back Kenny Irons wasn't a consensus All-American. All he did last season was lead the SEC in almost every statistical category. He did this despite not taking over the starting job until the Arkansas game.

So why was he not listed among the nation's elite during the preseason? While he was a consensus All-SEC selection, that's basically where it stopped. You have to wonder why the Auburn Sports Information Department is not doing more to promote Irons for the Heisman Trophy. As the guys at WarDamnTailgate.com pointed out, Irons doesn't even have an official web site promoting him. That's a must in today's Heisman race. WarDamnTailgate took it upon themselves to set up an unofficial site for Irons.

Maybe he doesn't want all the hype. It's certainly understandable. But when you are competing against Brady Quinn at Notre Dame and Adrian Peterson at Oklahoma, you better have something working for you. Fortunately, this week after being named the SEC's Offensive Player of the Week, Irons is starting to get some national love.

He probably has the best shot at the Heisman of any Auburn player since Stephen Davis (Bowden killed his chances by not giving him the ball). With Ronnie Brown and Carnell Williams splitting time it was an uphill battle. But Irons is on a top 5 team and has the skills to get to New York. Let's hope the national media continues to sing his praises.
