Tar Heel Defense Changes Lineup, Shows Improvement
It turns out the Heels only played poorly on offense and special teams...the defense did a much better job, and my initial call has been overturned.
Sure, Hokie running back Branden Ore rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns, but stats can sometimes be misleading. Two of Ore's touchdowns were scored on drives that both began inside the North Carolina five yard line...hardly worthy of defensive criticism.
So, what was the big difference in play between weeks one and two? Intensity, first and foremost. Also, after last week's defensive debacle against Rutgers, the UNC coaching staff replaced linebacking liabilities Chase Rice and Mark Paschal with Durell Mapp and Victor Worsley. These changes produced significant results. The defense played much more physically and held Virginia Tech to just 233 yards of total offense.
Which begs the questions, who gets the nod at linebacker this week against Furman and which defense will show up?
