Randy Gonigam owns a furniture store in the far southwest suburbs of Chicago, and he loves the Bears. Thinking the Bears' defense needed to prove its worth, Gonigam placed what essentially amounted to a wager with his customers: He told them to come on in over Labor Day Weekend, buy plenty of furniture, and if the Bears shut out the Packers in the opener, he'd give them a full refund.

Customers at Gonigam's World Furniture Mall loved the idea. To the tune of $300,000. That's the value of the furniture World Furniture Mall sold during the promotion. And, sure enough, the Bears went out and beat the Packers 26-0. The customers are all getting their money back.

So was Gonigam desperately rooting for the Packers to pick up a cheap score at the end of the game, just to save him the cash? Nope. Gonigam wisely bought insurance from a company that specializes in promotional giveaways. So it'll be the insurance company, not Gonigam, that's out the $300,000. If you saw an insurance agent at a sports bar cursing Brett Favre on Sunday, that might be why.
