Earlier this week, we talked about how big the LSU game had become and whether it was really Auburn's biggest rival. That question is still up for debate. What's not up for debate is the amount of fun I've had here this week.
In the two seasons I've been writing, LSU week has always generated the most traffic to the web site. It's bigger than both the Georgia and Alabama games (in terms of web traffic). It also generates the most hate mail. If my daughter didn't visit this site daily, I'd share with you some of the comments thrown my way. I've been threatened, called names I haven't heard since grade school and been told flat out where I could go.
So this must be what's it's like to be Paul Finebaum. No wonder he loves his job.
When the article entitled, "Auburn Turns Attention To Bayou Trash," was picked up by Sports Illustrated.com earlier this week, the emails began to flood in. It got worse when Tiger Droppings.com picked up the story. We were suddenly getting thousands of visits from very angry LSU fans. Some apparently took it very seriously.
It's for that reason that I love LSU fans. I love to poke fun at them and I love talking with them. They are every bit as passionate about college football as Auburn people. And yes, they are still very touchy about the corn dog reference.
When Tennessee and Florida came off Auburn's yearly schedule in the early 90's because of conference realignment, I thought we'd never find another rival to take their place. Boy was I wrong. Neither of those games come close to the passion and good old fashion hatred that this series has produced.
To my LSU friends (I use that term loosely): Thanks for a great week. This is what makes SEC football the best in the country. I admire your passion for your team. You are great fans. For those of you heading to the Plains, we welcome you. And I truly mean that. Enjoy yourself while you're in town. Saturday is going to be a great show.
