This is an attempt to update the status of former University of Georgia defensive football players now playing professionally: DL Richard Seymour: Starts at end but has started at tackle for the New England Patriots. Considered by some scouts to be the best all-around DL in football.
DT Marcus Stroud: Starter and two-time Pro Bowl selection for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
DT Jason Ferguson: Well-paid starting NT for the Dallas Cowboys.
DT Jonathan Sullivan: Former first-round pick of the New Orleans Saints is trying to resurrect his career as a reserve for the Patriots.
DT Kedric Golston: Rookie is a reserve for the Washington Redskins.
DE Charles Grant: Starter for the New Orleans Saints.
DE Phillip Daniels: Starter for the Washington Redskins.
DE Robert Geathers: Part-time starter and key contributor for the Cincinnati Bengals.
DE Demetric Evans: Was never a regular starter at Georgia but is a key reserve for the Redskins.
DE Josh Mallard: Cut by the Atlanta Falcons after a good fall camp, Mallard was resigned to the Falcons' 53-man roster this week.
LB William Witherspoon: The St. Louis Rams' highly-paid free agent signee from the Carolina Panthers is one of the NFL's most versatile and underrated LBs.
LB Odell Thurman: Bengals' starting MLB. Suspended for first four games this season due to substance abuse. Runner-up for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year last season.
LB Boss Bailey: Continues to battle injuries problems but has usually started when healthy for the Detroit Lions.
LB Kendrell Bell: Has constantly been hindered by injuries since being honored as NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2001 with the Steelers. Currently starting at OLB with the Kansas City Chiefs.
LB David Pollack: Starter with the Bengals' 4-3 defense but really should be playing end in a 4-3 defense or OLB in a 3-4 defense.
LB Randall Godfrey: Veteran is starting ILB with the San Diego Chargers. Has said he will retire after this season.
LB Thomas Davis: Made the transition from safety and is now a starting OLB with the Carolina Panthers.
LB Tony Gilbert: Reserve with the Jaguars.
LB Arnold Harrison: One of the surprises of the Steelers' training camp, made 53-man roster as reserve OLB.
S Jermaine Phillips: Starter with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
S Sean Jones: Won starting free safety job with the Cleveland Browns in fall camp.
S Greg Blue: Reserve safety and special-teams standout for the Minnesota Vikings.
CB Champ Bailey: Perennial Pro Bowl player for the Denver Broncos who Pro Football Weekly ranks as the best CB in the NFL.
CB Tim Jennings: Rookie second-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts has battled injuries in fall camp but figures to eventually become a solid nickelback with the chance of possibly starting.
CB DeMario Minter: Rookie fifth-round pick of the Browns currently on the physically unable to perform list. Expected to return to 53-man roster in October.
Other Bulldogs (defense) playing professional football:
DT/OL Jermaine Smith: With the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League.
S/WR Corey Johnson: With the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL.
DT/OL Keith Drayton: With the Florida Firecats of AFL2
Notes: Former Bulldogs DL Nic Clemons (Washington), LB Chris Clemons (Washington), CB Bruce Thornton (N.Y. Jets) and DE Will Thompson (N.Y. Jets) were in NFL training camps this year but did not make a roster. The professional careers of S Terreal Bierria, S Kentrell Curry, CB Tim Wansley and DE Antonio Cochran appear to be over.
