Heels to Get Deeper at Running Back?

Word around the North Carolina football program is that the Tar Heels may utilize more running backs this week against Furman.

Through the first two games, Ronnie McGill and Barrington Edwards have shouldered the load. However, McGill continues to suffer from cramping problems and Edwards has not been as productive as coaches would like in relief of McGill.

As a result, expect to see guest appearances in the backfield by Richie Rich and/or Justin Warren. Rich has excellent speed and Warren has great vision that should make for quality depth and a change of pace against the I-AA 'purple people eaters' from south of the border.

I've also heard rumors from the practice field that offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti has been tinkering with a few option plays, possibly to better utilize the mobility of recently demoted quarterback Joe Dailey.

Who knows if they'll run the option against Furman, or if at all for that matter. Heck, those rumors could prove to be completely false. But if they do break it out, remember to come back so I can tell you I told you so.

Personally, I think that's how Dailey should have been utilized from the minute he stepped on campus in Nebraska. But then again, he probably wouldn't be wearing Carolina blue if that were the case.
