The president of the Dallas Police Association is understandably upset that the responding officers to the Terrell Owens suicide/overdose/drug reaction/misunderstanding/wrong number/prank call yesterday are under scrutiny right now. Owens' publicist remarked yesterday that she felt that police were taking advantage of Owens. Here's Senior Cpl. Glenn White's response, and it might provide an interesting little glimpse into how police officers view celebrity football players: "The officers reacted because they were called to this location to do this job. Now they're being put under a microscope by some fancy little football person," Senior Cpl. Glenn White said. "Give me a break. Those officers are 10 times better than this man. ... We police officers don't go out to these calls and make stuff up."Easy there, copper. I know that you're upset because your men are in a tough spot, and I understand that. I do. They responded to a call, they probably didn't do anything wrong, and now they're in the spotlight a little bit when they probably don't want to be. You may have a legitimate beef there.
But is it too much to ask for you to not rate the comparable worth of human beings? Your men are not better than anybody else, just because they wear badges. Yes, there are some knucklehead receivers in the world, but I'm also certain that there are some knucklehead cops. I didn't know it was the job of the police to assess the value of certain human beings over others.
And it's not even that I'm taking up for Terrell Owens. I'm just pretty uncomfortable with the idea of cops thinking that they're better people than anyone they're called to help.
And besides, I think Terrell Owens would like this to go away just as much as they would. Come to think of it, I don't think Owens even disputed anything that the police said. He didn't deny saying anything that the police quoted him as saying. It's his publicist that's calling out the police, not the fancy little football player. If you want to go after someone, go after the publicist. How much better are your men than her?
