The Worst Defeats in North Carolina Football History

North Carolina's drubbing at the hands of Clemson last week got me to thinking about just how bad things can get for a football team in any one game.

Against the Tigers, the defense looked simply miserable and the offense wasn't far behind. However, the lopsided 52-7 score ranks as just the 8th worst defeat in North Carolina's history.

It's interesting to note that although John Bunting's Clemson loss ranks 8th on the list, he is also reponsible for the first and second worst defeats as well. Here's the list with the coach's name in parenthesis:

Worst Defeats in UNC History:

55 pts. 2005 @ Louisville L 14-69 (
John Bunting)
52 pts. 2002 vs. Maryland L 7-59 (John Bunting)
50 pts. 1969 @ Florida L 2-52 (Bill Dooley)
49 pts. 2000 @ Florida State L 14-63 (Carl Torbush)
49 pts. 1945 @ Pennsylvania L 0-49 (Carl Snavely)
46 pts. 1944 @ Army L 0-46 (Gene McEver)
46 pts. 1941 @ Tulane L 6-52 (Ray Wolf)
45 pts. 2006 @ Clemson L 7-52 (John Bunting)
45 pts. 1988 vs. NC State L 3-48 (Mack Brown)
41 pts. 1989 vs. Duke L 0-41 (Mack Brown)
41 pts. 1955 vs. Tennessee L 7-48 (George Barclay)
