Early in the John L Smith era at Michigan State, a recruiting story was published about Smith's meeting with then five-star linebacker and current All-American defensive end Lamarr Woodley. In it, Woodley stated he had been slapped by Smith, except, like, playfully, you know. Woodley made the blindingly obvious decision and came to Michigan, but by then Smith had been dubbed "Coach Slappy" by his detractors on the
RCMB, the internet's largest Spartan message board.
In the ugly aftermath of the Spartans' loss to Illinois, Smith did the world one better by slapping himself. At a press conference.
For real:

Speculation is that this was some sort of shot at Charlie Weis for his
(probably spurious) claim that a Spartan slapped him in last week's sideline melee.
And yet this man has made more money than 99% of people will see in their lifetimes. It is the mystery.
