Five Takeaways From the Virginia Tech Win
2. Matt Ryan is playing in pain. The announcers picked up on it late in the game, but it was clear that the ankle was bothering him earlier. Fortunately he has a few extra days to heal up before Florida State.
3. O'Brien handled Aponavicius perfectly. O'Brien is no Beamer when it comes to Special Teams, but he put his new walk-on kicker in position to succeed. All the kicks were manageable and Aponavicius came through. Eventually the kid will have to try a long Field Goal, but tonight was not the night to test him.
4. Fowler and Herbie are great in the booth. Gameday has slipped of late, but these two called a great game. Good observations. Fair commentary. They pointed out BC and Virginia Tech mistakes. Didn't pull any punches with the refs or with some of the Hokie hijinks. Very refreshing.
5. BC can still win the conference. I've already said O'Brien will never coach in a BCS game, but I would be happy to eat my words. BC still needs help and needs to play better down the stretch, but this game showed that they can hang with anyone in the conference and the defense is better than its reputation.
