The rumors are buzzing everywhere...Randy Moss wants out. Mike Tice wants him. Del Rio respects Tice's input. The Jaguars have the young talent at WR necessary to lure Moss away from the Raiders. Put it altogether, and Randy is practically a Jaguar. Right? No. Absolutely not. While big name rumors like this are fun, logic points to Randy keeping his full moon arsenal in the Bay Area. Let's break it down.
1) Randy Moss wants out of Oakland. The Raiders want to get him out.
The Fact:
We'll start at the heart of the rumor. The Raiders are fed up with the disappointing play of Moss, and he's fed up with the series of QBs that seem more comfortable throwing the football to the opposing team. Remember when the Raiders acquired Moss and Jordan and people thought their offense was going to run like a well oiled machine? Yeah, that was last year...the 49ers couldn't put more than 9 on the board. Well, the Raiders lost 34-20 to the 49ers last week. Yeah, the 49ers. Memo to Al Davis: You need an NFL QB to win in the NFL. Your QBs belong in the XFL.
The Fiction:
The Raiders will take out their angst by unloading their biggest name. This is the NFL. Randy Moss makes a ton of money. The cap hit stemming from that trade would be enormous. The Raiders would be left with a marginal player and a lot of dead money in return for someone they recently gave up a top pick and overrated player (Napoleon Harrison) to acquire.
2) Mike Tice yearns to bring back his main man, Randy.
The Fact:
Tice has good reason to be nostalgic for the days of the Randy ratio...he was a head coach, and the Vikings were almost good then. Unfortunately, that says more about Mike Tice as a head coach. Don't get me wrong, this guy can coach...offensive lines.
The Fiction:
Tice actually wants to be reunited with Moss. Honestly, I feel like this rumor is entirely based on the fact that Tice used to coach Randy Moss. Did anyone even bother to try to remember how much of a headache Moss was for Tice in Minnesota? The Randy ratio was as much a tool to motivate Randy to play hard on every play as it was to win football games.
3) The Jaguars have the young WR talent to make a deal work.
Fact:
Reggie, Matt, and Ernest are both young and talented.
Fiction:
The Jaguars will trade Reggie, Matt, or Ernest. Do you really see this team breaking up the tallest receiving trio in the league? What would the announcers talk about during Jaguars games? Plus, Reggie plays hard every play and is having a much better season than Moss. Matt Jones was having a solid season before he got injured, and he can win the jump balls like Moss anyways. Ernest Wilford is the consummate 3rd receiver. He makes big plays and drive sustaining catches. He gets the most out of his athletic ability and is comfortable in the role-player role. In other words, he's the anti-Moss, and that's just what the Jaguars need to cap off their talented young trio...not an aging, has-been with attitude problems and a penchant for taking his pants off.
