Buoyed by their recent victory over the NBA in banning leather basketballs, PETA has now turned its focus to the National Football League, and specifically, the NFC West showdown between the Seattle Seahawks and the St. Louis Rams.
Apparently, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization has arranged protest demonstrations outside the Special Ed Dome, inviting defenseless football teams under their wing of protection. The picture at right shows new NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell flanked by two PETA protesters, who are giving their all to get behind this issue.
The St. Louis spokesperson for Peta, Mr. Phil A. Mignon, was mobbed by a throng of local news media and network sports outlets, interested in why Peta would take up a cause that apparently has nothing to do with their charter.
"There's more than one way to skin a cat", said Mr. Mignon, as he opened his remarks explaining how taking on a high profile target like the NFL would heighten the awareness of PETA's general mission, even though no actual animals are expected to be harmed during this regular season football contest.
Mr. Mignon continued, "we saw what this Seattle team did to to St. Louis last season, and we're judging that after being embarrassed in Chicago two weeks ago, the results will most certainly be a slaughter of the hometown Rams. We're just trying to make people understand that even though it's just a team nickname, it's not okay to harm and mutilate farm animals for entertainment purposes."
When pressed as to why PETA would use member resources for an all out demonstration of this magnitude, even though there's so many more deserving issues to attack, like cat juggling and the Missouri black-market gerbilling ring, Mr. Mignon responded, "with all due respect to the Seahawks organization, we saw this as a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone."
(obviously this is not a picture of Roger Goodell, but it is from a real PETA demonstration)
