Much has been made about the brawl between football players at the University of Miami and Florida International University, and especially the way television commentator Lamar Thomas cheered on the fight and said he wanted to go down on the elevator so he could get on the field and join in. I'm sure Thomas will defend his comments by saying he was joking. But people who remember Thomas's NFL career will know why Thomas is the last person who should be joking about violence. Thomas was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being arrested for beating up his pregnant fiancee. Later, after signing with the Miami Dolphins, coach Jimmy Johnson sent Thomas home from the team hotel after a loud (but not violent) argument with the same woman.
These incidents happened a decade ago, and Thomas seems to have cleaned up his life since then. But the enthusiasm he showed for one of the most horrible incidents I've ever seen on a football field, and his statements that he wished he could participate, make me wonder why any television station would hire him.
