Although the USC Trojans are 6-0 and, in the word of coach Pete Carroll, "exactly where we want to be," the Trojan nation is grumbling over the new-look offense which has gone from creative and explosive to staid and methodical in just one season.

In order to win their game against Arizona State, the Trojans' offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin took the ball out of the hands of struggling quarterback John David Booty and handed it off to Chauncey Washington. Again. And again. And again.

Rather than inspiring memories of a great USC drive a year ago against Notre Dame where Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush managed to push their way into the end zone, some folks are thinking back to the Rose Bowl in 1980 against Ohio State, when the Trojans ran the ball for 83 yards to win the game.

Scott Wolf recounts this tellng detail of the game: "Head coach John Robinson told offensive coordinator Paul Hackett before the drive, ''If you throw one pass, you're fired.''"

Of course, Robinson and Hackett are responsible for Pete Carroll being able to be at USC today.
