Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich, who has missed the last three games with an ankle injury, will have surgery and could miss the rest of the season. That means David Garrard is now the man.It could also mean Leftwich has played his last game in a Jaguars uniform. Coach Jack Del Rio has never hidden his desire to have a mobile, playmaking quarterback like Garrard, which means that the rest of the season is essentially an audition for Garrard to become the starter for good. Right now the Jags are saying all the right things about looking forward to seeing Leftwich make a swift recovery, but if Garrard shows himself to be a competent quarterback over the next seven games, I think he'll have the job next year.
Unfortunately, Garrard has never done anything to indicate that he's a competent quarterback. He had an absolutely horrid game in last Sunday's loss to Houston, and right now he ranks 38th out of 39 quarterbacks with at least 60 passes this season according to the Football Outsiders statistic DVOA, which judges quarterbacks on a play-by-play basis. I think Leftwich's injury makes it unlikely that Jacksonville will make the playoffs, which is great news for wild card contenders like Kansas City and the Jets.
Note: Defensive tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson are listed as questionable on the injury report for Monday night's game against the Giants, but both players missed practice Saturday.
