Michael Irvin-Tony Romo Controversy Not Going Away

Although ESPN is avoiding it, the controversy over Michael Irvin's statement that Tony Romo's athletic ability is evidence that he has some black ancestry is not going away.

When I first posted this story at Cowboys FanHouse, I wrote that a Google News search showed that the mainstream media hadn't touched the story. That is no longer the case. Google News now shows that several newspapers have written about it, as have popular sports sites like Deadspin and CBS Sportsline. AOL's Jason Whitlock mentioned it in his most recent column. Pro Football Talk has been all over it. (We'll know it has really hit the big time when it's part of the Wikipedia pages for Irvin and Romo.)

I seem to be in the minority here, but I don't think Irvin should be fired. (Well, I think he should be fired, but because he's a bad football analyst, not because of this.) However, I do think ESPN should face this issue head on, the way it would if Irvin were a commentator for Fox or CBS or NBC or any other network. If, say, Shannon Sharpe, a CBS commentator, had made the exact same comments, does anyone doubt that it would have been discussed on ESPN by now?
