Much Ado About B-Lloyd's Helmet Toss

For the second straight day Joe Gibbs will be meeting with the temperamental Brandon Lloyd. Apparently there are numerous issues they need to discuss although I'm sure his post-interception helmet toss on Sunday is at the top of the agenda. Even without the personal foul penalty it's become easy to tell that Lloyd is not happy (money can't buy you everything?).

If I were Lloyd I'd be pissed off my own damn self. Now I'm not going to condone the actions of the helmet chucker but speculation that Lloyd could be held out of next week's active lineup is just stupid. Sure Joe, talk to the guy, try to get beyond the ordeal and see if you and your player can reach a reasonable accord. But to deactivate B-Lloyd? I thought Al Saunders let his play calling take care of that.

There's no question that Lloyd has been a huge disappointment so far this season. He is in the first year of a thirty million dollar contract and his stats rival those of a seventh round draft pick (he's still without a touchdown) ... unless you're talking about Marques Colston.

Even though he's being poorly utilized in the passing game Lloyd has done an excellent job in support of the running game. His key blocks are always overlooked by those eager to point out the folly of his stat lines. On Sunday Lloyd held his block for the extra two seconds that allowed Ladell Betts to round the corner for the first score of the game. Earlier this year he absolutely laid out his defender freeing up Clinton Portis to score on the longest run of his aborted season.

So let's try to keep things in perspective, no he's not producing, but that doesn't mean he's incapable of a high level of production. I have full confidence in Lloyd's skills, I just hope the coaching staff can utilize them before he starts throwing anything else.

However I feel like the media and the local fans have been way too quick to criticize the young MC. Yeah he hasn't done much of anything to make the Redskins front office look anything but foolish, but it's not all Lloyd's fault. With only a few exceptions (like Campbell's first NFL pass) he's done everything on the field that has been asked of him. It's up to Al Saunders to find ways to get the ball into Lloyd's hands down the field (of course the same is true of A.R.E.).
