I was watching yesterday's Ravens-Chiefs game when Kansas City kicker Lawrence Tynes lined up for a 32-yard field goal. The kick looked good, and I picked up the remote to flip to Colts-Jaguars. But before I could change the channel, I saw the official make the "no good" signal. I was confused. Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf, calling the game for CBS, were confused. My colleague MJD wrote in his always-entertaining weekly Smorgasbord, "I think Lawrence Tynes just made a field goal that he didn't get credit for." Tynes thought the kick was good.I don't know how an official screws up something as simple as whether the ball went through the uprights, but I think the official in yesterday's game did just that. When CBS showed the replay, Dierdorf helpfully explained that even though it looked good, the ball didn't go through the uprights -- it was an optical illusion. Right, and I'm sure Oklahoma recovering that onside kick against Oregon was an optical illusion, too.
Tynes said he had a good look at the ball in flight. Asked whether he thought the kick was good, Tynes was mindful of a possible fine for criticizing officials."I can't comment on that," he said.
