I've long been of the opinion that the Downtown Athletic Club should cease the practice of giving former Heisman Trophy winners a vote for the rest of their lives. Former winners don't necessarily continue to follow college football after they leave the game, and they tend to be biased toward players at their former schools. (Former Heisman winner Eddie George announced that he was going to vote for his alma mater's star tackle, Orlando Pace, before Pace's final year at Ohio State.)But I think Carson Palmer has made the ultimate mockery of the Heisman voting. This year, he voted for his brother, Jordan. "I voted for my brother, Troy Smith, and Darren McFadden," Palmer said. "In that order. He was a longshot."
Yeah, Jordan (a quarterback at Texas-El Paso) was a longshot -- because he didn't deserve the award. It's not really important in the grand scheme of things, I suppose, but if the Downtown Athletic Club wants to maintain any semblance of credibility, it really ought to stop letting former winners vote.
