At first, I thought that the Chiefs would be fired up after legendary owner Lamar Hunt passed away just a few days ago. The Giants won convincingly (36 - 0) against the Redskins last season after Wellington Mara passed. Then again, Hunt was gravely ill for a few weeks now, and that never really inspired the team to win. When the Chargers run the ball:
LaDanian Tomlinson is fired up about comments made by Tamba Hali after the Chiefs' last victory over the Chargers, claiming that the Chargers were soft. Still, the Chiefs are one of the few teams that have been relatively successful against LT. LT hasn't run for over 100 yards against the Chiefs since 2003, and even that was heavily weighted over one 55-yard run.
Tomlinson will be fired up and, despite LT's MVP season, I don't know that he'll be gaining a lot of yards on the ground. His impact will be felt more so in the way the Chiefs stack the box to stop him.
When the Charger pass the ball:
While LT hasn't been overly successful against the Chiefs, Antonio Gates has been a one-man wrecking machine. Though, since Derrick Johnson has been introduced to the Chiefs' defense, Gates hasn't been wildly successful. DJ came back last week from an ankle injury and shut down Todd Heap, one of the best tight ends in the game. I think DJ should probably do the same against Gates today. I would think Gates is good for about 60 to 70 yards, but nothing mind-numbing.
Though, surprisingly, the Chargers' greatest growth this season has been in their ability to use their average wideouts well. So much of that is due to the Chargers' outstanding pass protection. Last game, the Chiefs won primarily because their pass rush flustered the Chargers and forced a ton of turnovers. Then again, the Chiefs were at home and their pass rush has disappeared for so long, they are considering calling CSI to find it. That is the key to the game today. The Chargers will put up points, but can the Chiefs win one or two battles in the trenches and either fluster Rivers or force turnovers?
Prediction:
Sure, the Chiefs may be fired up, but I truly believe they are outmatched in this contest, especially since the Chiefs are playing on the road this week where they have truly been awful. Despite the Chiefs playing with heavy hearts, it is difficult to pick the Chiefs to win this one: Chargers 30 - Chiefs 21.
