Kelly Quinlan of UGASports.com is reporting that Georgia offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Neil Callaway will be named head coach at Alabama-Birmingham today at a 3 p.m. press conference at the school.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Georgia coach Mark Richt spent Saturday night phoning Georgia's impressive and vitally important nine offensive line commitments to assure them that he would hire a quality replacement for Callaway.
"Coach Richt called me today and told me not to worry," Columbus star Antwane Greenlee told the AJC. "He wanted to know if this would affect my decision. I loved Coach Callaway, but this does not affect my decision. I still plan on going to Georgia."

Callaway has a de-facto title of offensive coordinator, since Richt has handled play-calling duties for all six of his seasons at Georgia and is now considering turning those over full-time to quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo.

However, Callaway does help script the offensive gameplan and his input was essential to Richt relying more on the ground game, beginning in his second season at Georgia in 2002.

Callaway's loss, though, will be felt more on the offensive line, where he carries a reputation as an outstanding position coach, although mediocre recruiter.

Georgia will return just three offensive linemen with any game experience next season and will be breaking in nine new players - three redshirt freshmen, three JUCO transfers and three true freshmen - this spring.

The 51-year-old Callaway, an Alabama native, emerged as the top candidate at UAB after fellow top candidates - LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and South Carolina defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix - both pulled their names out of contention.
