Is Zach Randolph All-Star Material?
By my count, there are at least eight players in contention for what I guess are three, maybe four reserve spots. Here's the question: Is Portland's Zach Randolph an All-Star?
Statistically, most definitely. He's got the best double-double average in the NBA - 25.1 points, 10.1 rebounds. Hitting 84 percent of his free throws. By scoring in double figures in every game this season (he missed one due to the middle finger fiasco), Zach's helped the Blazers to a surprisingly-respectable 12-15 record - despite the fact super-rookie Brandon Roy has missed significant time with injuries.
But due to the bottomless talent pool at forward, and taking into account his offseason troubles, and the flicking off the fans incident, will Randolph be Las Vegas-bound in February? Here's how I see things shaking out:
Carmelo Anthony, Denver: Leading scorer in the NBA, but reputation sullied following sucker-punch of New York's Mardy Collins. How much will sitting 15 games hurt his chances? Chances: 5:1
Carlos Boozer, Utah: Seems like a lock. Third-leading rebounder in the NBA, averaging 21.9 points, and the 19-8 Jazz have been the best story of the season thus far. Chances: 2:1
Rashard Lewis, Seattle: Was quietly having his best season as a pro - career-best numbers from the field, foul line, points, assists - until a serious right hand injury this past week put him on the shelf for eight weeks. Chances: 15:1
Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas: I'd replace KG in the starting lineup with this guy, but that's just me. He's a lock to make the team. Chances: 2:1
Elton Brand, Los Angeles Clippers: Mr. Consistency is actually not having a great season, which is perhaps a reason the Paper Clips have been a major letdown. Points and rebounds are both down, and LA is languishing in the Pacific cellar. Chances: 12:1
Lamar Odom, Los Angeles Lakers: Sadly, he went down with a knee injury in early December and hasn't returned. But, he's having arguably his best season to date, and the Lakers looked strong early with him. Darkhorse to make the team. Chances: 10:1
Shawn Marion, Phoenix: Not the key to his team (Nash is), and often overshadowed by another teammate, dunking machine Amare Stoudemire. But the Matrix has the numbers (19.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 1.6 blocks). Definitely a toss-up. 4:1
Zach Randolph, Portland: Assuming he stays out of trouble for the next few weeks, why not? Chances: 3:1
Keep in mind that due to injury, Pau Gasol, Kenyon Martin, and AK-47 won't enter the discussion this year. And what about essential role players like Houston's Shane Battier and Phoenix's Boris Diaw? Too bad for them.
