Giants to Have an Excuse for Not Using Shockey This Weekend

He's not going to be there. Jeremy Shockey, who didn't practice all week, is not even making the trip to Washington because of an ankle injury. He had been listed as questionable all week, but it's not going to happen for him. Who knows if it would have made a difference if it was a normal week and the game was on Sunday.

Replacing him will be Visanthe Shiancoe, who isn't terrible. He's a 4th-year player with pretty good hands and he's a decent blocker, but he's not nearly as fast or talented as Shockey, nor does he bring nearly the same energy.

You could argue that it doesn't matter, because the Giants have thrown to Shockey so infrequently this year. And hey, that might be true. As a tight end, the Giants might not miss him that much. But the Giants depth chart is awfully thin at the position of "Guys Who Care" these days, and Shockey was at the top of it. Who his backup is at that position, I have no idea. We'll see Saturday night.
