Watching the Ohio State-Indiana game tonight, it was easy to envision the Buckeyes winning the national championship in three months. It was also easy to envision them losing a first- or second-round game to an opponent with vastly inferior talent. Ohio State's freshman phenom, Greg Oden, is great, but let's not start comparing him to Lew Alcindor just yet. Yes, his rejection in the final minute was as cool a block as you'll ever see, but he was lucky to be on the floor at all -- he easily could have fouled out earlier in the game, and his fourth foul was an especially silly one that took place 25 feet from the basket.
Still, Oden was the best player on the floor during Ohio State's 74-67 win. He had 21 points, five boards and four blocks, and he made nine of his 10 free throws despite shooting left-handed while his right wrist heals. Perhaps most telling, Indiana's D.J. White went 3-of-14 from the field with Oden matched up against him for most of the game.
A win at Ohio State would have been huge for the Hoosiers, a team that will probably fall short of a tournament berth this season. Kelvin Sampson has Indiana going in the right direction, but tonight the Hoosiers were playing against a team with NBA talent, and Indiana is a long way from being able to compete with that.
