With the college hoops season heading into conference play, we'll take a look at some of this year's new coaches and assess their progress.

School: Indiana

New coach:
Kelvin Sampson

Old coach:
Mike Davis

Last year's RPI rank: 34

This year's RPI rank: 30

Comments:
Indiana hung tough in a loss to Ohio State in the conference opener, and the Hoosiers have a better-than-even chance of making the tournament this year. But Sampson wasn't hired for what he can do this year, he was hired for the kinds of recruits he can bring to Indiana. Despite facing NCAA sanctions for his recruiting violations at Oklahoma, Sampson has reeled in some top-notch talent that will give Indiana one of the best freshman classes in the country next season. That class is led by Eric Gordon, who backed out of a verbal commitment to Illinois because he wanted to play for Sampson. No matter what happens this year, when they see Gordon next year, Indiana fans will be glad Sampson is their coach.
