The Warriors decided to keep their gem of an NBDL find, awesomly-named wing Kelenna Azubuike, for the remainder of the season. His selection cost undersized point guard from Florida, Anthony Roberson, a roster spot. (That's three recent busts from Florida at the point guard spot - Teddy Dupay and Brett Nelson being the others. Remember when everyone was calling Nelson Jerry West Jr. because he had a handle and was from West Virginia? What a joke that was. Dupay, meanwhile, is shuffling decks in Reno or something. Kind of makes you wonder about Taurean Green, right?)
Azubuike is worth the gamble. He's supremely athletic - think Desmond Mason. Plus, when he scores and gets fouled, the announcer can play a quick clip from the Bubba Sparxx song, Ms. New Booty. But this is a post because of what Don Nelson said about his newest acquisition:
"From what I've seen skill-wise, he could have easily been a top 10 or 15 pick in the first round (instead of being undrafted in 2005)."The hell? Ordinarily, I'd chalk this up as a coach trying to pump up the confidence of a player ... but then I had an hour to kill today, and decided to look it up. And there's absolutely no way Azubuike could have been a Top 10 or 15 pick in that draft. Could he have been drafted? Sure. But the way I see it, there were only two, maybe three actual mistakes in the Top 15: Ike Diogu to Golden State at nine (but the Warriors needed a post player, which he is), Fran Vazquez to Orlando at 11 (but the Magic needed a big man; they just foolishly didn't do their homework and realize he wasn't leaving Spain anytime soon), and Antoine Wright to the Nets at 15 (very good shooter, here seems like a reach, though).
Azubuike's game is run and jump, and outside of the new-look Grizzlies, nobody plays that style. He can however, dunk, as the above clip suggests. But with the likes of Matt Barnes, Jason Richardson, Monta Ellis, Mike Dunleavy, and Mickael Pietrus ahead of him at the shooting guard/small forward, the Kentucky product won't be getting much burn anyway.
