The New York Times Is So Cutting-Edge

I know you're going to have a really hard time believing this one, but according to the NYT, headbands are now considered cool. No word of a lie.

It seems that at some point in history, they were considered a fashion faux-pas (when guys wore them mostly to keep sweat out of their eyes). Those who dared to wear the headband took a lot of verbal abuse:
"I used to get killed," the immortal Cliff Robinson says.

He heard comments like, "Take that stupid headband off," or "You look ridiculous in that headband."

"I heard a little bit of everything," Robinson added.
Man, this New York Times publication has got some real potential. Their finger is obviously pressed on the pulse of the culture:
Today, headbands in basketball are as common as high-tops and jerseys. Players wear them more for the look than to stop sweat. Off the court, they have become a part of urban fashion. And they are often a nice souvenir for fans lucky enough to catch one when a player throws his into the stands after a game.
I'm telling you: Watch out for these NYT guys. They might make something of themselves someday.
