George Welsh Arrested For DUI

I won't condone drunk driving. It's obviously a terrible idea and has caused untold death and pain to many innocent people. But if I know anything about Charlottesville, it's that a lot of students do it anyways, and it's incredibly rare to actually get caught. Mostly because, like any college town, traffic is usually backed up and slow, making it easy to avoid a fuss.

So the question is immediately raised: exactly how drunk was former UVA head coach and College Football Hall fo Famer George Welsh when he got arrested for driving under the influence over the weekend? And doesn't he look a little like a disheveled Hef in that mugshot picture? It's good to see he hasn't changed a bit, refusing a breathalyzer test as if it were a post-game meet and greet with the media.

College coaches getting a little too cuckoo off that wowee sauce is nothing new, but at least Welsh didn't achieve the "Dr. Grabass" heights of Larry Eustachy, the "America's Most Wanted"-meets-"America's Funniest Home Videos" vibe of Bob Huggins, or the very, very creepy old-man drunkenness of Eddie Sutton falling asleep in a liquor store parking lot.

But don't get it confused: George Welsh isn't some old coot getting his swerve on in a Cadillac after too much Wild Turkey with his oatmeal. As a matter of fact, just last year, he was actually named a candidate in a DI-A coaching search. Okay, it was Temple, which ended up with UVA DC Al Golden after initially considering UVA DC (and now Kansas State HC) Ron Prince. To ensure they encompassed all manner of UVA alumni, candidates also included Chase Metheney, Steve Malkmus, myself and that dude who reenacted the 9th inning of the 1986 Wolrd Series with Tecmo Baseball.
