Tony Gonzalez to Retire as a Chief

The Chiefs didn't waste any time.

Anyone here think that Tony Gonzalez was going to shop around, get flooded with competitive offers, possibly hold out until he got the contract he wanted? Anyone else think the Chiefs were going to slap the Franchise tag on him?
Nope. Instead, the Chiefs signed Tony Gonzalez to a 5-year extension, all but assuring he'll retire as a Chief.

While a few salary figures have been thrown out, I'm not going to get into a guessing game. I've learned that the salary that the papers report normally does not represent what the player actually earns. I'll hold judgment on this signing's cap ramifications until there is more information out there on the structuring of his deal.

It's a terrific start for the Chiefs' offseason. I once said that Tony Gonzalez is the best tight end in football and I still stand behind it. While Antonio Gates and Todd Heap dominate in the passing game, Gonzalez can dominate as both a receiver and a blocker. More importantly, he's succeeded on a high level with virtually no help his entire career. I can't help but wonder how he could've done with an average receiver, let alone an outstanding one. Instead, he gets double- and triple-teamed on virtually every play. The only reason the Chiefs' marginal receivers have ever had any success at all is because Gonzalez draws so much attention away from them. If you need any further proof of this, pay attention to games where Gonzalez is shut down on single coverage (it's rare, but it's happened). The Chiefs' receiver just *poof* disappear. Gonzalez has also become a very underrated blocker, and this is why I contend he is the best tight end in football. He is a key outside run blocker for LJ and he has unselfishly given up receptions to help his offensive line in pass protection. It's just a shame that Gonzalez has to serve as an offensive lineman simply because Jordan Black can't do his job.

This is a terrific signing and I couldn't be happier that Gonzalez will retire as a Chief. Nothing would have been worse than seeing Gonzo in anything but red and gold. He is an outstanding football player, arguably the greatest tight end of all time, and an enormous asset to the Kansas City community. Welcome back, Tony!
