So, you think you have enough money to buy out Charlie Weis' contract? Think again, hot shot. Peter King at SI.com reported in his blog that the buyout is a cool $21 Million. I don't care who you are, that's a lot of scratch. Put another way, if an NFL team wants to acquire the services of Weis, they would first have to write a check for 21 big ones, then would have to offer him a contract where he makes substantially more money than he does at Notre Dame. All told, an NFL franchise would have to drop something like $8 or $9 Million a year to sign Weis for three years, which, suffice to say, is quite a bit more than any coach is worth.
Will this put an end to the Weis to NFL rumors? I doubt it. But hey, at least we know that Weis will be with the team, in his words, "until they fire me or I retire."
