Chargers wide receivers coach James Lofton could be named the Raiders head coach as soon as today, and is currently working with the Oakland Raiders on contract details, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

If the reports are true ... well, James Lofton must be a hell of an interview. His name only surfaced in connection with the Oakland job very recently. He's either made one incredible impression on Raiders management, or he's the only candidate who didn't have major reservations about the amount of control he'd be given with the team.

Lofton's been the Chargers wide receiver coach since 2002, and while it's true that the Chargers haven't had particularly great receivers in recent years, it's also true that guys like Vincent Jackson and Eric Parker (recent poor games notwithstanding) came out of nowhere to become valuable contributors under Lofton.

Acee also points out that Lofton was a finalist for the head coaching position at Stanford, before the job was eventually given to Jim Harbaugh.
