A regular feature profiling each of the 17 candidates for enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Name: Michael Irvin
Position: Wide receiver
Career: 1988-1999 Dallas Cowboys
Pros: A major reason the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in the 1990s. A good route runner and a physical receiver. Selected to five straight Pro Bowls.
Cons: As long as Jerry Rice was around, Irvin was never the best receiver in football. Had only two seasons that could really be described as "great," 1991 and 1995.
Verdict: Irvin's off-field life -- drugs, arrests, comments about Tony Romo's ethnicity -- should play no part at all in this. The Hall of Fame's rules are clear that players are to be judged solely by what they did on the field. But Irvin was mostly a beneficiary of Troy Aikman's accurate passing and the Cowboys' great running game opening up the secondary. Irvin was a very good player, but he falls short of Hall of Fame worthy. He gets a vote of NO.
Previous votes:
NO: Richard Dent, Fred Dean, Ray Guy
YES: Russ Grimm, Gene Hickerson
Note: By rule, the Hall of Fame must induct between three and six new members.
