It's been two weeks since Tony Romo ended Dallas' season and we're still no closer to finding out if Bill Parcells will return as the head coach in 2007. According to the AP, owner Jerry Jones told Parcells to take all the time he needs, at least until February 1, the deadline in his contract.
Fans, on the other hand, would like to know sooner rather than later, and while they wait, have come up with a few theories:
- He's staying because he keeps showing up for work every day. If he was quitting, he'd be out by now.
- He's going because he let trusted assistant coach David Lee leave to become the offensive coordinator at Arkansas. Parcells has known Lee more than 30 years and he's widely credited with developing Tony Romo's throwing mechanics.
- He's going because he's supposedly thinking about other jobs.
First, Parcells hasn't quit yet, so it makes sense that he'd show up for work. If not, wouldn't he just resign and get on with the rest of his life?
Maybe David Lee bolted for Arkansas because of Tony Romo. After a fast start, Romo started piling up interceptions like Bill Belichick collects phone numbers at a single bar. Lee could've realized that Romo isn't as good as the media hype suggests (although I don't think he's as bad as the last month of the season either) and Arkansas was the easy way out.
If Parcells is thinking about other jobs, there's been no mention of it, at least recently. Rumors were he wanted the Giants GM job, but New York hired Jerry Reece.
Unlike Bill Cowher, who resigned about 15 minutes after the season, it seems like Parcells still wants to coach in the NFL. Maybe he's negotiating a way to get Terrell Owens out of Dallas before announcing anything formally.
