Notre Dame Point Guard Kyle McAlarney is done at Notre Dame. Not just in basketball, but from the school.According to sources close to the Irish men's basketball program, McAlarney has been dismissed from the university, effective immediately, following his arrest last month on misdemeanor marijuana possession.Last week, the County prosecutor let McAlarney into the diversion program, as you would expect for first time offender of a misdemeanor possession charge. The Student Affairs Committee was less forgiving in going hardline with the dismissal from the school.
It is unclear whether McAlarney, who can apply for readmittance for the summer session, will return to Notre Dame or transfer to a school closer to his Staten Island, N.Y., home. He was enrolled for the spring semester and had attended classes since last Tuesday.
That' seems a little over the top in terms of punishment considering the offense. Maybe it's the precedent at Notre Dame. Maybe they just are firm supporters of Rep. Mark Souder and the war on drugs (though, hopefully they have a different view on Intelligent Design) despite not being in his district.
