New Mexico State basketball fans are enjoying a renaissance of college basketball thanks to second-year coach Reggie Theus. Heck some in Las Cruces might even be dreaming of a trip to the big dance. But all of the success and recent adulation since knocking of Nevada last week comes with a price. A price that might include Theus. Expect the buzzards to start circling and for Theus to be the hot candidate for every top college job opening this offseason. Such is life for the mid-major that experiences any sort of success. Heck, you might even see Lon Krugers name mentioned with some of the top coaching jobs in the country. (Though, it would be hard to find a more attractive job in the college basketball coaching world than at UNLV.)
Aggies fans can hold out hope that maybe Theus will pull a Mark Few and stick around New Mexico State to build a big-time program and the premiere team in the WAC. But anybody who has been to Las Cruces knows that it is going to be really hard to keep Theus in town. Odds are that he will skip off to the first attractive opening in any of the BCS schools.
Just be sure to enjoy the ride for right now.
