Football signing day is drawing near (can you say Feb. 7?) and Indiana is close to wrapping up its 2007 class. The latest addition is defensive end Fred Jones, a 6-5, 240-pounder from Tyrone, Ga. Jones chose the Hoosiers over Marshall. He also considered Central Florida.

Jones visited IU on Jan. 12.

The Hoosiers now have 18 verbal commitments. They are expected to sign between 18 and 20.

The most heralded commitment remains Jerimy Finch from Warren Central High School in Indianapolis. He's the standout safety who had originally committed to Michigan. Rumors have him set to visit Florida this weekend, and Michigan coaches have continued to recruit him.

Welcome to the consequences of recruiting elite athletes. IU coach Terry Hoeppner (pictured) won't know for sure he has Finch until he actually signs a national letter of intent. Until then, he's fair game because in the cut-throat world of recruiting, oral commitments won't stop coaches from continuing the recruiting process unless the athlete tells them to back off.

That, apparently, isn't happening.
