If the Patriots choose to franchise Asante Samuel instead of offering him a multi-year deal, the team now knows exactly how much it will set them back. According to the Boston Herald, the NFL Players Association released the franchise numbers yesterday, and tagging Samuel would cost $7.79 million (which is based on the average of the top five salaries at that position). There is one hitch, however. Tight end Daniel Graham is also a free agent and teams are only allowed to franchise one player per year. New England relied heavily on their tight ends last season, in both the passing and running games (Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney probably had a lot to do with that).
Graham, a former first-round pick, is the best blocking tight end on the team, but New England may not want to pay him the $4.31 million franchise salary. The Patriots drafted former Texas tight end Dave Thomas last April, possibly as a replacement for Graham should he not return to the team in 2007.
