It's Super Bowl Week, which means it's time to start Crowning some Asses as we countdown to the big game. Specifically, we in the NFL FanHouse will be nominating players, teams ... anything NFL-related from the 2006 season that's worth honoring. Here's the first nomination for the most overpaid player.Edgerrin James is rooting for his old team to win on Sunday. But what must James be thinking right now? Last year he decided to leave the Colts for the Cardinals, who were offering him more money -- $15 million for his first year in a Cardinals uniform alone.
But his performance in Arizona, as well as the Colts' performance without him, shows just how overpaid he is. With the Cardinals, he averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry. And while the Cardinals' offensive line is weak, James deserves a lot of the blame himself. He just doesn't have any break-away speed, which is why despite running the ball 334 times, he never once managed a carry of even 20 yards.
Meanwhile, the Colts' offense was even better without him. Rookie Joseph Addai was more than adequate as a replacement. And while some said the Colts would miss his abilities in blitz pickup, the numbers don't bear that out -- Peyton Manning threw more than 100 more passes in 2006 than he did in 2005, but he was sacked three fewer times.
James was never worth the money the Cardinals paid for him, and that contract was yet another foolish move for a team that never stops making foolish moves.
