In a story that surprised no well-informed Georgia fans, Athens Prince Avenue High junior quarterback Jon Richt has committed to Clemson. This will no doubt garner national media attention, because Richt is the oldest son of Georgia head coach Mark Richt. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has one story up that quotes Richt's high school coach and a shorter story that quotes Mark Richt on his son's decision.
"It was an exciting day for us as a family," Mark Richt told the AJC on Friday. "Jon called the coaches from Clemson and told them he wanted to be a Tiger. They seemed genuinely excited about accepting his commitment. [Wife] Katharyn and I are very happy for him, and very proud of him."
The younger Richt is a solid NCAA Division I-A prospect, but not one who is highly coveted. I have already detailed how this is a solid decision for all parties.
Jon Richt will have little pressure on him at Clemson, since superstar recruit Wily Korn, a senior quarterback commitment right now, will likely start for Richt's first three seasons in the Clemson program.
Richt would never had been treated fairly at Georgia. Many fans would have complained if he earned playing time and his every move would have been scrutinized.
The Dawg nation wishes Jon Richt nothing but success at Clemson, particularly since the Bulldogs and Tigers do not resume their once storied rivalry until 2013, one year after Richt's fifth and final season at Clemson.
