Hawkeyes Sign 22; Join Badgers in Signing Top Recruits From Minnesota

The Iowa Hawkeyes announced the signings of 22 football players to letters of intent on Wednesday. As usual, the Hawkeyes cleaned up in Iowa, as Rivals.com says they signed the state's top five prospects.

Not only that, but coach Kirk Ferentz (right) also earned himself some national accolades with his latest class. The group ranks in the top 35 of most major recruiting services, including ESPN.com and Rivals.

Among the big gets for Ferentz is defensive back Cedric Everson, who backed out of his commitment to Michigan State so he could sign with Iowa. Everson's story is well-chronicled on Hawk Central. He initially committed to Georgia Tech, then decided to go to Michigan State because he thought his family wanted him to stay close to home. When his father told him to do whatever would make him happy, Everson made the move to Iowa.

Everson helps boost a defensive group that was already pretty good. He and Des Moines product Jordan Bernstine could end up being mainstays in the Iowa secondary.

In addition to the in-state signees and Everson's change of heart, Ferentz also went to neighboring Minnesota to get one of the state's better lineman in Broderick Binns. A 245-pound defensive end out of Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, Binns chose the Hawkeyes over the homestate Gophers, despite reports that new Minnesota coach Tim Brewster was going to try to convince Binns to renege on his commitment.

In case you're wondering, the Hawkeyes, now without 12-year (or so it seemed) starting quarterback Drew Tate, did sign one quarterback, Marvin McNutt out of St. Louis. One would have to consider the quarterback job as "open" entering spring practice next month, but sophomore Jake Christensen may have the upper hand.
