There's a new defensive coordinator, new talent, and with any luck a new era in Notre Dame's defense coming up next year. Following two subpar years on defense and three high-profile meltdowns, Rick Minter was shown the door in favor of some fresh blood on the defensive coaching staff in Corwin Brown.Brown, being a student of the Parcells/Belichick school of coaching has spent his career learning the nuances of the 3-4 defense, and Charlie Weis announced in yesterday's press conference that the team will be transitioning to Brown's signature 3-4 from Minter's 4-3 base package this season.
Weis gives a Football 101 rundown of the system in his presser (about halfway down, you can search for "34 personnel"), but the basic theory is to put more speed and athleticism on the field (with 4 linebackers and 3 defensive linemen, as opposed to the inverse in a 4-3 package) and design more creative blitz packages due to the diverse skills of the outside linebackers who play a hybrid LB/DE position in the 3-4.
With a new system comes a whole new depth chart, and we'll be sure to keep you posted on the battles for the brand new positions that are being created for the system.
