Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson pleaded guilty to violating his probation for 2005 gun charges. Johnson will be sentenced in March. The interesting part for the Bears, though, is that the team attorney had some harsh words for Johnson.
Cliff Stein, a Bears attorney who handles player contracts, said Johnson and his family met with team officials after Posey was killed. He said Johnson saved his job by providing the team with a plan for changes he wanted to make in his life, Stein said.
"We're always going to look at the facts. But I would say, generally, he wouldn't have much of a future with the team if something else were to happen," Stein said.
The Bears haven't said what's in that "plan for changes," but it sure sounds like they're fed up enough that there's a good chance he won't be a Bear anymore in September. I think they might have cut Johnson this season if they hadn't already been without the injured defensive tackle Tommie Harris. I'd lay the odds at right around 50-50 of whether he'll still be around. If he is, expect the NFL to suspend him for the season opener.
