Tiki Barber has traded Tom Coughlin for Matt Lauer. The New York Times is reporting that Barber, who is in the process of finalizing his paperwork to retire from the Giants, will become a part of The Today Show. Barber is also expected to have some role on NBC's Football Night in America. (Because, you know, they really don't have enough analysts on that show.)Although Barber will make good money on TV, he definitely won't make the kind of money that he would have made if he had stayed with the Giants. He was scheduled to earn more than $4 million in 2007. And Barber will also have to turn down endorsement deals. If he had taken a job with an outfit like ESPN, he might have been allowed to keep such contracts, but Today is part of NBC News, and journalists are prohibited from taking money for commercial endorsements.
Barber leaves as one of the best players in the history of the Giants' franchise, and he leaves a big hole in Big Blue's offense. But he'll be a great addition to NBC, and I could see him becoming as good a broadcaster as he was a running back.
