Ending a protracted legal battle with the NCAA, the University of Illinois has finally capitulated and banished Chief Illiniwek to the Island of Outdated Offensive Stereotypes, where he will live among old Amos & Andy tapes and that grainy VHS copy of Son of Blackula.

There's a wide variety of opinions on the Chief and his fate. Some have pointed out the absurdity of the NCAA's crusade against cheeky, slightly-off color mascots in light of the much more serious issues of exploitation raging throughout the sport. Others feel that Illiniwek is the poster child of the closed-mindedness that the league needs to wash itself of. Whatever your opinion, it's time to say goodbye and close a curious chapter in mascot history.

Godspeed, Illiniwek.
