The Texans continue to find themselves in the middle of juicy rumor involving the state of their starting quarterback. With word out that David Carr could be on his way out of Houston for as little as the new Arcade Fire album (Gary Kubiak's a big fan), the Denver media is reporting ways for Jake Plummer to wind up in Houston. Except the newest rumor involves another notable Bronco -- running back Tatum Bell.Heard an interesting scenario the other day: Tatum Bell and Jake Plummer could be joining coach Gary Kubiak in Houston. The rumor reeks of media invention. I just won't allow myself to believe, despite the Texans' track record of failed decisions, that anyone would give up a potential superstar for two overrated retreads. There's a chance the Texans could absolutely blow it (again) with their eighth overall pick this year, but they owe it to themselves (and the poor fans of Houston) to at least try to make it work.
The Texans are interested in Plummer. Whether through trade or release, Plummer is likely to end up with Kubiak. There is talk the Broncos and Texans will discuss a trade that would send Plummer, Bell and an early-round draft pick to Houston for the No. 8 overall pick and perhaps a player.
The Texans already have an emotionally-fragile quarterback and a physically-frail running back. Not to say they shouldn't make a play at both Plummer and Bell -- a change of scenery, and a reunion with Kubiak, could revive their careers -- but certainly not at the cost of the eighth overall pick. That pick is reward for a year of hard-fought inadequacy, and it shouldn't be given away for ten cents on the dollar, no matter how shiny that dime might appear.
