Norv Turner has left his post as the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers to become the head coach in San Diego, and the 49ers are looking for their third offensive coordinator in three years. Head coach Mike Nolan says he's looking for a replacement who will run the same system as Turner and therefore not put too much pressure on quarterback Alex Smith to learn a new offense. But that sounds like a bad idea to me. Nolan ought to hire the best person for the job. If that person also happens to use an offense with a playbook that looks a lot like Turner's, that's great. If not, Smith needs to put that impressive Wonderlic of his to use and learn a new playbook.
Still, with an eye toward continuity, Nolan seems inclined to choose one of the five offensive assistants remaining on his staff. Receivers coach Jerry Sullivan is the only one of them who has been an NFL offensive coordinator, with one year in Arizona in 2003. Sullivan doesn't have nearly the offensive reputation of Turner, but he might be the best choice available: By late February, the pickings are slim in the NFL coaching ranks.
