Talk about a position that is easy to get behind. Alan Drooz in the San Diego Union Tribune floated this idea today. And he's spot-on in his analysis, except for a few key points.
  • Brad Holland's a good guy and a good coach.
Let's not start talking crazy here. Holland took the USD job with only one job in mind, and that was eventually landing the UCLA job. Make no mistake about it. Holland wanted to be the UCLA coach and secretly envies Ben Howland. Holland took the Cal State Fullerton gig and immediately thought about moving to Nevada. (And the ironic part is that, at the time, Jim Rome called that a "lateral move" during his show.) So the opportunistic Holland was always looking for his next stepping stone to his prized job. But then something funny happened. Gonzaga became the marquee program of the WCC and everybody realized that Holland just isn't that good of a coach. But in all honesty, he would have been an ideal UCLA candidate under Pete Dalis.
  • He runs a clean program.

Cal State Fullerton was under NCAA probation for transgressions during the Holland era. So it is not so much that he runs a clean program, but rather he just hasn't been caught yet. Obviously he learned his lesson from Fullerton and won't let his assistant coaches pay for classes with credit cards.

So it looks like it is time for Holland to go, and unless he can pull a miracle off in the conference tournament, that's not likely to happen. Especially if he has to rely on his coaching skills.
