The NFL Combine has become the unofficial opening day for the NFL draft. Here is a quick rundown of the winners -- guys who improved their draft stock with a solid Combine performance -- and the losers -- players who will need a great Pro-Day workout to get back in the good graces of NFL general managers, coaches and scouts after a lackluster showing in Indianapolis.
- Troy Smith, QB. Troy Smith already has a couple of strikes against him because he only stands at 6'0". Now that he decided against working out at the Combine, his draft stock could take more of a tumble. He will need an impressive Pro-Day workout to mitigate concerns scouts have about his abilities.
- Chris Leak, QB. Just like Troy Smith, Florida quarterback Chris Leak has spent most of the Combine answering questions about his height. He measured just a hair under 6'0" but for some NFL personnel guys it might as well be 3'0". Leak has a strong arm, and plays well outside of the pocket, but if teams are looking for a drop-back passer, Leak could find himself on the outside looking in on draft day.
- Calvin Johnson, WR. I know we listed Johnson as a Combine winner, but despite his great 40-time, he might big a really big loser at the bank: because the Browns, who don't need a wideout, won the coin flip for the third overall pick, if Johnson goes fourth overall to the Buccaneers, it could cost him $7 million. Not his fault, I know, but $7 million is $7 million.
- JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, QB. Both players are still the top two quarterbacks in the draft, and Russell will probably still be the first overall pick, but his chubby appearance didn't endear him to NFL coaches and scouts, and he opted against working out at the Combine. Quinn wasn't going to workout either, but decided to participate in the bench press. He posted an impressive 24 reps, but strength aside, there are still questions about how he will perform at the next level.
