I think Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith is making a big mistake by not working out at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. The very elite prospects can get away with skipping the workouts, but Smith doesn't qualify. Yes, lots of scouts, coaches and general managers will attend the Ohio State pro day, but they'll mostly be there for Ted Ginn. Few quarterback coaches will attend. So why isn't Smith working out in Indianapolis? "I just got off the banquet trail," he said on NFL Network today. "I haven't been able to work out."
That is a terrible response. If Smith is serious about becoming an NFL player, he needs to make time to work out. Yes, he's been going from banquet to banquet picking up awards. Too bad. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning make personal appearances all off-season, too. But they find time to stay in shape. If Smith doesn't find that kind of time, too, he's not ready to be an NFL quarterback.
